How in God's name do you all stand this?

[Too many long nights spent able to do nothing more than read the Journals, which provide no insight to the Malnosso. Too many cups of coffee and glasses of Scotch and soda. Too many questions he can't find answers to.

Anthony Blunt, to say the least, is on edge.

He's taken to drawing lately, more than he has in years. Though, unlike what he's told his fellows, he never really abandoned his art. His scenes are bleak, though-- Snowy buildings that loom and cast long shadows. Scabbed skin with numbers just visible under the wound. Complacent wraiths. All of the sketches are safely hidden in a journal kept under a floorboard in his bedroom.

He can think of no way in. The talk of "missions" he's heard have not seemed to endear individuals to the Malnosso, so volunteering for one would be only suicide, not helpful. Their captors have been silent themselves, there has been, so far as he has seen, no direct line to speak to them. Except, perhaps, just before Halloween, but he had not been in a proper state to ask questions then.]

I'm not convinced that God has anything to do with it. Him or any other deity.

...Of course.

[There's always at least one who has to try and joke.

But it won't do to snap at people. He ought to at least try and keep trying to get along. Though it's far harder when he is getting more and more restless.]

[ sometimes a joke is more than a joke. ]

This place is tricky. The opposite of cut and dry. It's...uncut and wet. Dampish. To some people? This place is paradise.

[ not to her, no. this is no paradise. but there are...perks. ]

[Complacent wraiths.]

I have a hard time enjoying idleness.

Idleness is a hard thing to enjoy. Not when you're not used to it. Forget having rugs pulled out from under you; it's ten times worse to have a rug added. Some of us don't know how to deal with rugs. All cozy and relaxing.

[She likes to hear herself talk.

Or is afraid of silence.

Or both.]

Indeed.

It isn't conducive to having a useful population.

Reading, training, school lessons, piano lessons. I know it doesn't sound like there's a whole lot to do in Luceti but you really have to find it because it's not gonna find you.

[Meanwhile, you have a leash around your neck, keeping you from going anywhere outside a nice little yard.]

And what is it you want to do? Long-term and large-scale.

[ more like a funny combination of both. she pretends the first in order to hide the second. it works out well for her -- mostly. ]

Not much of this is. Then again -- their definition of useful is a little skewed. We're tin soldiers and lab rats to them. Nothing more.

Depends on which part you're trying to stand.

[identity profile] pugilistinpink.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Don' got much we can do, Mr.Anthony. [An apologetic, pursed-lipped smile.] 'ts best not think about it too much. It's the kind a' thing that'll keep anyone up at night an' make 'em go crazy.

People have a remarkable capacity for adapting even in bad situations. And, well... for most of us, there are friendships to keep us going.

[identity profile] deadlydebutante.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Staying in my room has helped, for the most part.

[And trolling observing other's posts to the network. Might as well get an idea of what she's dealing with.]

Though I guess it depends on how 'important' social interaction is to you.

...It's remarkable, really, that a population is content to sit idly by while others provide for them. Only a few here seem interested in doing anything productive with their time.

[Another mark, in his eyes, against the ideals of Communism Kim and Guy were both so fond of. Still, it was Communism or Fascism, so he was Communist. For now.]

Let us begin with "everything."

[identity profile] winksandnods.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
That is precisely the thing. No one does anything. A few people run shops, though it is hardly of any use, as there is nothing to buy. A seamstress, I have heard of. At least that is something productive.

The same way anything else life may throw at you is dealt with; with patience and a lot of whisky.

[identity profile] winksandnods.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
...Ah, yes. One can't care that one has no purpose if one is sufficiently intoxicated. Of course.

[voice]

[identity profile] winksandnods.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
And apparently "idleness" is the preferred method for "adapting" here.

[identity profile] winksandnods.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Social interaction, I can take or leave. Productivity, I consider essential.

[identity profile] winksandnods.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
...Wonderful.

[identity profile] winksandnods.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:34 am (UTC)(link)

Life continues. I can only speak for myself, but I'm not one to stagnant when there are things to be done.
